Common Causes Of Slow Internet That Might Surprise You

When the internet drags, most people blame their provider. Sometimes that is fair. Often, though, the cause is inside your own home and a lot cheaper to fix than switching plans.

Your Wi-Fi, not your internet

There is a difference between your internet speed and your Wi-Fi. You might be paying for a fast plan, but if the Wi-Fi signal is weak by the time it reaches your room, that is all you get. Thick walls, distance from the router, and a router hidden in a cupboard all sap the signal.

Too many devices at once

Phones, TVs, tablets, cameras and smart speakers all share the same connection. Add a couple of 4K streams and a big download and even a good plan feels slow.

An old router

Routers age. One that is five or more years old may not keep up with a modern connection or the number of devices a household now runs.

Background updates and malware

Windows updates, cloud backups and app downloads run quietly in the background and eat bandwidth. Malware can do the same, less quietly and less welcome.

If your internet is slower than it should be, we can work out whether it is the plan, the Wi-Fi or the gear, and fix it. See mesh Wi-Fi and network optimisation.
