Does Your Computer Need Repairing? Five Signs To Watch For

Computers rarely die all at once. They warn you first, and if you catch the signs early a repair is usually cheaper and less stressful than waiting for the thing to stop completely. Here are the five we hear about most.

It has slowed to a crawl

A machine that takes minutes to start, or stalls every time you open a program, is telling you something. Sometimes it is just clutter and a tune-up sorts it. Sometimes it is a failing hard drive, and that is worth checking before it takes your files with it.

It is running hot and loud

Fans roaring and a case you could fry an egg on usually means the cooling is clogged with dust. Left alone, the heat shortens the life of the whole machine. A clean and fresh thermal paste brings the temperature back down.

Random crashes and restarts

The odd blue screen or a computer that reboots on its own points to a deeper fault, a failing part, a driver problem, or a corrupted system. It will not fix itself.

Strange pop-ups or a browser that has changed

New toolbars, a different search engine, or pop-ups that will not go away are classic signs of malware. The sooner it comes out, the less damage it does.

It will not turn on properly

No power, no display, or a machine that gets partway and stops is worth a look rather than a trip to the tip. Plenty of "dead" computers are a cheap fix.
